Quick Guide to ipod Accessories for your iPod Nano 8GB

Brian H Logan asked:

Buying accessories for your iPod Nano 8GB is one of the most exciting parts of owning the device. The market for ipod accessories has realized incredible growth over the past few years. This may be one of the reasons the iPod Nano 8GB has been able to dominate the digital MP3 player market.  Even though the iPod Nano 8GB comes with an earphone, some users opt for external speakers because the iPod’s internal speaker of the doesn’t play audio files . The internal speaker does have a purpose, though, as it will sound the beep from the alarm clock as well as warning tones.

External speakers will allow you to share your tunes with friends and family. Even small iPod Nano 8GB speakers work well for gatherings and parties. Some companies have cashed in on iPod accessories by offering the FM Transmitter to iPod users. This is one of the better iPod accessories for people who enjoy listening to live radio. The first of the iPod accessories that you should consider purchasing are those designed to protect your digital device from scratches and dirt. Not only can you protect your iPod with covers and cases, but many retailers offer stylish versions as well.

Your ipod nano 8gb will also keep you company when you go to the gym as you can tuck it into an armband, which is another of the most popular iPod accessories. One of the smallest of the iPod accessories, the armband is also one of the most convenient and innovative. Now you don’t have to leave your tunes behind when you go to the gym or for a run. No matter what position your workout puts you in, you can rest assured your iPod is safely tucked away in the armband. You can also use these iPod accessories when you are just out for a walk or riding your bike.

Although the iPod comes with an earphone, there are many other varieties of headphones and earphones sold by third party retailers. Depending on the color of your iPod Nano 8GB, you may be able to purchase headphones to match your digital player.

BMW is the first automotive company to release iPod accessories  for its automobiles. BMW introduced iPod automobile interface sometime in 2005. An iPod control was integrated into the built-in steering wheel, alongside the control and radio head buttons. The iPod Nano 8GB unit is safely confined inside the glove compartment, and is attached to a cable harness to keep it in place every time the car speeds up or is traversing rocky and bumpy roads. The iPod steering wheel control allows the driver to create and shuffle five (5) “BMW playlist”. The playlist is displayed through the small LCD of the vehicle’s radio head.

Create, Design & Launch Your Iphone Application

Stig Kristoffersen asked:

The Apple iPhone is an amazing device that invites  creativity. You’ve probably said to yourself: ‘I wish I  could do that on my iPhone.’

With the iPhone Software Development Kit (SDK), programmers can make your ideas reality – even if you yourself don’t know the difference between a C-pointer  and a SQLite database.

More than 200 iPhone application projects have already  been posted on Elance.com. Check out these tips in this article to get  your project kick-started.

We focus on the development of applications for the Apple iPhone, and we asked Nick Dalton, iPhone SDK specialist, to give Elance buyers a few tips on how to scope and post an iPhone Application project. Here’s what he had to say:

The iPhone is an amazing device that invites creativity. If you’re an iPhone owner I’m sure you’ve said to yourself: ‘I wish I could do that on my iPhone, or I have a great idea for an iPhone application’.

With the iPhone Software Development Kit (SDK), programmers can make your ideas reality – even if you yourself don’t know the difference between a C-pointer and a SQLite database. But before you go ahead and post your application idea to the buzzing iPhone project area on www.Elance,com. here are some pointers to get your project kick-started:

Study the Masters

Apple has already spent a lot of time thinking about how to present information and build interactive applications on the iPhone. The applications that come with the iPhone are the results of this research. Study them in great detail and try to apply as many of the user interface metaphors as possible to your application.

Not only will Apple be flattered if you imitate the user interface in their applications, but they actually mandate it to a great level of detail as described in their Human Interface Guidelines.

Dream in Color Screens

Most applications for the iPhone will be very visual. Therefore it makes sense to provide your requirements as screen images or sketches. You don’t have to be a graphics artist to do this effectively. An iPhone programmer is looking for the following information:

- The type of layout each screen should have

- The buttons on the screens

- The actions associated with each button

The exact shape and format of your screen sketches is secondary. As long as they are readable, it’s a great way to communicate your application design to a programmer.

Be Realistic About Your Budget

Look at other iPhone projects posted on Elance to get a sense for the bid amounts on these projects. Read the descriptions of these projects to see if they seem to be larger or smaller projects than what you have in mind. If you set your budget to under $500 for something that is realistically going to take a programmer two months to implement, you are not likely to attract many bidders.

From a programming perspective, some things are easy to do on the iPhone, while other seemingly simple things are very time consuming. For example the beautiful cover-flow animation used in the music application on the iPhone should be simple to use in other applications. Unfortunately you can’t. If you want this animation within your application it will have to be written from scratch, probably costing a one month of work.

If you talk to an approved iPhone developer early in your application design process you can learn how to get most out of your budget by avoiding the things that are really difficult to do on the iPhone.

Don’t Be Too Original

iPhone users already know how to do certain tasks on their phones by convention. For example, if you tap an item in a list that has a > icon next to it, you expect to be taken to another screen with more information about that item. If your application needs similar functionality, don’t be creative and come up with a new way to solve the same problem. Use the conventions already established by Apple.

New conventions are difficult to establish especially with the touch interface because there is no way to discover how your application works on the iPhone. Unlike a website where you can hover with the mouse pointer over areas that look like you can interact with them and a tool tip or the status bar will reveal some clues to you.

Know Your Limitations

The current version of the iPhone SDK, which is used to write applications for the iPhone, has many restrictions and limitations. Some of them are common sense, e.g. you can’t send text messages from an application. Imagine an application that sends out thousands of text messages without your knowledge, who is going to pay the phone bill for that?

Other restrictions are maddening: applications cannot access the log of phone calls, or interact in any way with the calendar or the music stored on the iPhone.

To Apple’s credit, the iPhone SDK is an amazing piece of software especially given that it was publicly released as a Beta just three months ago. Some of the shortcomings listed above will likely be addressed in future releases of the SDK.

As a buyer with an idea for an iPhone application, you should educate yourself about these limitations before you spend too much time designing an application that is impossible to implement. Talk to a developer or company that specializes in iPhone development (and there are many available on Elance) and they can help you get on the right track from the start.

Before purchasing a new business phone system for your facility, it is important to understand the basics. It is necessary to take into account all factors that are specific to your business. As there are many service providers, it is important that you identify one that offers the best products, and those which are customizable to your requirements.

Choosing a Business Phone System

Gen Wright asked:

The phone service that a firm uses is as critical to a business as the product it is offering. Everyone has probably called in for tech support or help with a product at least a few times each year. What about communication within the business, including conferences with teams that are off-site? The telephone service is more critical then you may have originally thought. As such, selecting a phone service that is the best fit for your business is absolutely crucial.

The world of business telephony is very expansive and intricate, with hundreds of companies, both small and large, each of which offers very different services. You can purchase an old-fashioned PBX box and have it located on-site, buy an IP PBX and use your company’s data connection to take care of phone calls, or pick a Hosted PBX solution, where the provider manages the equipment in another location, and you manage everything via a web interface. With these drastically different options, it is crucial to know the important features of each choice to choose the one that best complements your business.

PBXes

PBX boxes are usually the conventional, ‘go-to’ business telephone service that most businesses pick when they need to set up a phone system. A PBX is the central hub of an office telephone network, connecting all the telephones in the office together and to the PSTN. It also allows for an abundance of calling features such as extension-to-extension dialing, call transferring and auto-attendants. Unfortunately, PBXes are prohibitively costly, and need to be stationed in the office itself. Furthermore, an IT specialist is also required to operate and manage them.

PBXes are the best solution for large corporations that have a workforce that is working from a central location. These businesses can pay for the high cost of getting and managing the PBX, and having the box in the same location as the people who are using it can be useful.

IP PBXes

IP PBXes are almost the same as traditional PBX telephone systems, the difference being that they use VoIP to conduct telephone calls. There is still a central box that connects all phones to each other and has to be located in the office. However, IP PBXes employ VoIP, which grants companies all of the associated benefits. Conventional telephone devices can be used, along with the newer IP phones.

The presence of Voice over Internet protocol technology provides increased flexibility and smaller costs compared to conventional PBXes. However, they are still costly enough that they may not be the ideal solution for smaller businesses.

Hosted PBX or Virtual PBX

Hosted PBXes are the newest entry to the corporate telephone market, yet they are the most innovative in leveling the playing field for small and large businesses. These providers offer much cheaper prices for the same suite of telephone service features, allowing businesses of any size to employ a professional telephone service. Hosted PBXes employ VoIP. This eliminates the need for separate telephone lines in your office, since the data connection is utilized to conduct telephone calls. VoIP calls are inexpensive, and have useful features associated such as voicemail-to-email. On the other hand, only IP phones can be used with this service.

Hosted PBX service providers take care of all the equipment themselves. Business clients who use the service can choose and customize features like voice mailboxes and auto attendants using a web interface, without having to go to the PBX itself. This grants a never-before-seen level of flexibility, giving businesses the ability to scale up or down as needed, without having to call in a specialist. It also eliminates the headaches of operating a hulking and complex piece of equipment, which is an added advantage for any office!

All the aforementioned qualities of hosted PBXes lessen the cost of employing an corporate telephone service. Hosted PBXes are ideal for small and medium-sized firms that have employees distributed over various places. Although employees are in different cities, the hosted PBX will link them all as if they are in one centralized office, allowing the business to present a unified image to its clients.

Amazon Kindle How-To Series: HELP! My Kindle 2 is Frozen!

Michael Piston asked:

One thing about electronic devices – they know how to put us in a panic every once in a while! The new Amazon Kindle 2 is no different – it sometimes seems to get possessed by one of those demons in the books stored deep inside it’s memory. While the Kindle 2 is a very well designed and durable device, it is subject to strange behavior. The worst of these behaviors is when the Kindle 2 freezes-up. The pages don’t turn, the screen saver won’t turn-off no matter how many times you “Slide and release the power switch to wake”.

There are a few things you can do to “unfreeze” your Kindle 2, but the best cure is a bit of prevention. First, let’s get to the “unfreezing”. In the Kindle 1 you have a few options to unfreeze your device:

A. Use the keyboard reset – hold down the ALT and SHIFT keys then press the “R” button.

B. Manually reset by remove the back cover and insert a paper clip (GENTLY) into the “Reset” hole to reset and unfreeze the Kindle.

C. Remove the battery (with the unit unplugged), turn on the power button to discharge the power in the Kindle, then reinstall the battery.

Unfortunately the new Kindle 2 does not have a keyboard reset, there is no manual reset using a paper clip, and the battery cannot be accessed. So you have one option left for unfreezing your Kindle 2. That is resetting the device using the Power button.

Before doing this it’s a good idea to make sure your Kindle 2 is completely charged. Even if it is “frozen” it should still charge – that is the charging indicator should light when the charger is connected. If the charging indicator does not light-up check your plug and if that’s OK contact Amazon Kindle support.

Once you are satisfied that your Kindle 2 is charged it’s time to reset. To do this -

1. Remove your Kindle 2 from the charger.

2. Slide the power switch to the right and hold it there.

3. SLOWLY count to 15 (the switch has to be held in-place for at least 15 seconds).

4. Release the switch.

5. What will happen? At first NOTHING so don’t panic.

6. After about 5 to 10 seconds the Kindle 2 will flash on and off several times.

7. The Amazon logo will appear along with a progress bar showing the Kindle is restarting.

8. Next the Hope page will load with the ebooks, audio books, and other media you’ve loaded onto your Kindle.

That’s it! You should be back in business ready to read another book.

A few things to remember:

If you only hold the Power button to the right for five to 10 seconds you’ll just turn the unit OFF. You have to hold the power button to the right for at least 15 seconds.

If the process above does not work – contact the Amazon Kindle support team. They are very helpful and may be able to do some other trouble-shooting on your device.

Now – how do you prevent your Kindle 2 from freezing in the first place?

Well, unlike the Kindle 1, the Kindle 2 does not like to be completely turned off and on. The unit goes into a screensaver power-down mode when not in use consuming very little power. Try leaving the unit on continually and take advantage of the power-down feature. This seems to prevent freeze-ups for many owners. Ok, ok, if you’re flying please turn off your Kindle and wait until you get above 10,000 feet before turning on approved electronic devices. And please disable the wireless feature Kindle while flying!

One other thing you can do to prevent Kindle 2 freeze-ups is to make sure your battery doesn’t fall below about 15% to 20% charged. The device seems to work better when the charge is above 20%. You don’t have to charge your Kindle 2 everyday – in fact that is NOT recommended unless you need it. Just watch the power indicator and give your Kindle 2 a charge when the battery level falls below 20%.

OK – by now we trust you are back to enjoying your favorite ebook or audio book. Congratulations! You’ve learned how-to unfreeze your Kindle 2 and prevent future freeze-ups from happening.

Reasons To Go Manual With Your iPod

Jason Cox asked:

If you are like most iPod owners, you probably have never even considered using the manual mode on your iPod. Do you even know what the manual mode is? First consider what exactly the manual mode is and then, why you should use it.

So, you go to your computer to upload music to your iPod, if you just plug it in and your iTunes music library automatically starts sending music to your iPod, then this is the automatic mode, not the manual. This is the default mode; it is already configured to update the contents whenever your iPod is plugged in.

When using your iPod, the manual mode, on the other hand, lets you select only the files you want and then transfer those selected files to your iPod. To switch your iPod into the manual mode, you first have to go to your iTunes Source list and select the iPod icon.

When you do this, a new icon should pop appear at the bottom right corner if your iTunes window. If you click on this icon, the iPod Preferences window will pop up. Now, to get your iPod to stop updating automatically, you need to enable the Manually Manage Songs and Playlists option. Click OK and the Preferences window will close. Now you are ready to start adding only the music files that you want.

In order to place new music onto your iPod, you need to drag the selected file from your iTunes library and onto the iPod icon in the Source list or into one of your playlists. If you wish to create a new playlist, just click its icon in the Source list and then click on the Plus button at the bottom.

If you have too many files to move manually, or if you just want to get music from a particular genre or artist, you can use the iTunes Browser (press Command-B) and you can select whole genres, albums, or artists to be moved to your iPod. Now that you have changed your iPod to update manually, you should not have to do it again unless you want to switch back to automatically update because this setting is stored on your iPod.

Now that you have changed your iPod to update manually you can easily connect it to more than one computer. This works for people who have more than one computer where they have music stored, like at college or work.

If you had your iPod set on automatic and you went to connect it to another computer, a window will pop up saying that your iPod library is about to be erased and will be replaced with music stored on this computer. Manual mode will save the user a lot of time and grief.

Another reason, you may want to use the manual mode of your iPod is because you are able to play songs that are stored on your iPod through speakers on the computer that the iPod is attached to. If you wish to do this, simply click on the iPod icon in the Source list and pick a song that is shown in the iTunes main window, press play. Or you can play an entire playlist by selecting it and pressing play.

More and more people are starting to change their iPod to manual mode for many reasons. For instance, you may be running out of space on your iPod and wish only to upload a certain few songs. Others want to delete songs from their iTunes library but want to keep it on their iPod.

However, you will not be able to copy music from your iPod back to your iTunes library. This is a protection added to try and cut down on the number of people who pirate music illegally.

Now that you know exactly what the manual mode on your iPod is, how to switch your iPod to manual mode from automatic mode, and some benefits of using it, you are now able to be more in control of the music that you have on your iPod. With the growing number of iPod owners and users, knowing how to use your iPod correctly is becoming more and more important.
